THE LEGEND HIMSELF

Rafael Mendes

Rafael Mendes, born on June 20, 1989, is one of the most dominant competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history. A prodigy of the sport, he trained under the legendary Ramon Lemos at the Atos academy, quickly making a name for himself with his innovative and aggressive style. Alongside his brother Guilherme Mendes, Rafael revolutionized modern BJJ with his mastery of the berimbolo and dynamic guard play.

Rafael’s competitive rise was meteoric. As a colored belt, he secured major titles, including the Mundial and the Pan Ams, showcasing his technical brilliance. In 2008, he received his black belt from Lemos, marking the beginning of an extraordinary black belt career. He dominated the featherweight division, winning multiple IBJJF World Championships and establishing intense rivalries, particularly with Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles.

Beyond competition, Rafael became a key figure in BJJ instruction. In 2012, he co-founded Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in California, where he continues to shape future generations of grapplers with his innovative approach and deep technical knowledge.
