Aussie Leg Lock Luke on class structure, fast progress and Josh Saunders' ADCC silver camp
Charles talks with guest Luke about progressing to ADCC-level competition in under two years of training. They also give general advice on how to improve your jiu jitsu.

Charles Allan Price is joined by Luke, known as Aussie Leg Lock Luke, who owns Sydney West Martial Arts in Penrith. Luke talks about his route into no gi and leg locks: studying early Danaher students frame by frame, meeting John Danaher at a seminar in 2016, and years of weekly remote private lessons with a Danaher student in New York. He also explains how his earlier job as an instructor outside jiu jitsu shaped his teaching.

Charles asks why Luke's classes feel different, and Luke sets out his three tiers of beginner, all levels and advanced classes, and why he does not run separate pro sessions. He argues that a committed hobbyist training two to four times a week can get very good within three years. That means learning how to learn, turning ideas into movement, staying safe early on, and getting guard retention and escapes sorted before chasing submissions. They also cover choosing training partners, easing in until your body is warm, and why Luke's competitors lift weights after jiu jitsu, not before.

The centre of the episode is Josh Saunders' camp for ADCC, where he took silver after beating Roosevelt Sousa and Felipe Pena before losing the final to Victor Hugo. Luke covers moving from volume to intensity, daily match-length rounds with overtime called without warning, rotating fresh partners, short high-intensity positional bursts and shot drills against the clock. He also tells how a missed meal before an earlier event in Moscow left Josh drained, and why fuelling became a priority.

Charles adds the strength and conditioning side: why a low-intensity aerobic base helps you recover between hard efforts, why simple compound lifts are enough for most grapplers, and how strength training helps bone health as you age. Luke explains why he came back to lifting in his forties.
